Description
We examined the effectiveness of fumaric acid as a urine-acidifying agent for treatment of struvite urolythiasis. Fumaric acid was administered to one cat (100mg/kg/day)and three dogs (50mg/k g/day)suffering from struvite urolythiasis. The fumaric acid was dosed per os or added to diets twice a day by dividing into two equal quantities. Urine pH decreased from 7.0-8.5 to 6.0-6.5 by 7-10days after the beginning of administration. In one dog, continuous administration of fumaric acid for more than a year maintained urine pH at 6.0-6.5.
