Abstract

Phenolic resins are thermosetting resins that form three-dimensional network structure by heating. Phenolic resins give good thermal stability and mechanical strength, and so are used in automobile component regarded safety as important. Among them, we reviewed on phenolic resins used for friction materials such as brakes and clutches. We explain request characteristics of friction materials and resin modification, development trends towards that. Also, we explain our recent approach to prevention of migration by optimization of resin component for impregnation and development of water-soluble phenolic resins for decrease in VOC.
