Description

Cancer patients receiving similar chemotherapy regimens experience wide variations in side effects. Chemotherapy alone, can not explain these variations. Therefore, other variables should be considered to determine their importance in the incidence of side effects.
The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship of severity of side effects of chemotherapy regimens, patient's perception of disease, anxiety, and health locus of control. Subjects were 87 patients with a confirmed diagnosis of cancer who were receiving chemotherapy hospitalized in a cancer center. Each subject completed instruments designed to measure the effects of the independent variables on severity of side effects of chemotherapy.
The results of analysis of data showed that severity of side effects was significantly correlated with the number of chemotherapy cycles received, patient's perception of disease, and anxiety. Those individuals, with many cycles of chemotherapy, a very negative perception of disease, and higher state and trait anxiety, experienced more severity of side effects. However, severity of side effects was not significantly correlated with the number of chemotherapeutic agents and health locus of control.
