Lithographic ink media were prepared from precipitated calcium carbonate extender pigments with particle size of 0.03 to 1, μ and a rosin-modified phenolic resin varnish, with the pigment volume concentrations of 16 to 36%. The calcium. carbonates with the particle size of over 0.2 μ were either surface-treated with inorganic materials or not treated at all, and those with the particle size of less than O. 1 μ were all surface-treated with organic materials. The realtions between the calcium carbonate particle size and optical, tack as well as flow properties of the ink media were studied.<BR>The activated calcium carbonate with the particle size of 0.03 μ gave the highest transparency. The plotts of percent transmission of 550 mμ ray of the ink film against the particle size gave straight lines. The ultraflne calcium carbonates gave higher gloss than alumina white and blanc fixe. The gloss of ink fiim increased linearly with the decrease in particle size from 1 to 0. 06, μ, below which no further increase was observed. The tack increased linearly with the decrease in particle size. The tack and flow properties were also affected by the particle-surface characteristics.<BR>The rheograms of the ink media under high rates of shear showed that finer particles gave higher yield values and stronger gel structure. The apparent yield value measured with a spreadometer increased linearly with the decrease in particle size within the range 0.2 to 0. 03 μ.
