Abstract

By esterifying the surface silanols on silica or the surface hydroxyl groups on titanium oxide with 3-phenyl-1-propanol, alkoxy group (3-phenyl-1-propoxy group) containing benzene nucleus structure was introduced onto these metal oxides. By using the benzene nucleus, red or yellow pigments with silica or titanium oxide as core were prepared by deriving the surface groups to the structure similar to Sudan I (azo dyestuff) or Tartrazine (Food Yellow No.4). The characteristics of these pigments were investigated.<BR>As the result, the prepared pigments had colors similar to the corresponding dyestuff or the aqueous solution. Specific gravity and hiding power corresponded approximately to the metal oxides used as core. These results mean that many pigments of various color may be easily prepared by deriving the surface groups to the structure similar to suitable organic colors and hiding power may be easily regulated by selecting kind of used core oxides. Resistances to heat and light were also measured
