Description
The effects of ammonium salts on the color or crystal structure of mercury-cadmium sulfide pigments were investigated.
Sample-a series were coprecipitated by adding sodium sulfide solution to mixed solutions of cadmium. salts and mercury (II) salts. Sample-b series were coprecipitated by adding sodium sulfide solution and ammonium salts solutions to mixed solutions of cadmium salts and mercury (II) salts. The starting salts used in this experiment are chloride (Sample C-), nitrate (Sample N-), sulfate (Sample S-) and acetate (Sample A-) of cadmium and mercury (II) and ammonium salts are chloride, nitrate, sulfate and acetate. The coprecipitates were heat treated at 300-500°C for 2 hours. The powder properties of the coprecipitates and their heat treated products were investigated by spectral reflectance, X-ray diffraction and specific surface measurements.
Results obtained are as follows ;
(Sample C-) The addition of ammonium chloride accelerated particle growth and β→α phase transition of the pigments and was effective for red color development.
(Sample N-) The powder properties of the pigments were little affected by addition of ammonium nitrate.
(Sample S-) The particle growth, β→α phase transition and red color development of the pigments were reduced by the addition of ammonium sulfate.
(Sample A-) The addition of ammonium acetate was effective for the preparation of the pigments with uniform powder properties and the extension of the temperature range of red color development.
