Description
When sodium 10-undecenyl sulfate (SUS), which is a polymerizable surfactant with a terminal double bond, was added to a positively charged alumina in aqueous solution, a bilayer of SUS was formed on alumina. In order to fix such a bilayer strongly on alumina, the bilayer of SUS was polymerized with UV irradiation in presence of an initiator. The results of zeta potential indicated that the fixation of bilayer was enhanced. Also, the dispersion stability of alumina was improved by the polymeriza tion. The micropolarity in the bilayer decreased, while the microviscosity increased with UV irradiation, probably due to a more compact packing of SUS by polymeric covalent bondings. Furthermore, it was found that most of the polymeric SUS on alumina was retained even through a washing process.
