Abstract

Alkali hydrolysis treatment as a surface activation method of fine particles of cross-linked acryl-styrene polymer and the cobalt coating of their surfaces were investigated. Monodispersed and cross-linked spherical acryl-styrene polymer particles were used as the fine polymer particles.<BR>By the alkali hydrolysis treatment, carboxyl groups were introduced on the surface of the polymer particles to activate them. After being heated and refluxed in diphenyl ether solution with tris (acetylacetonato) cobalt (III) ((Co (acac) 3)) and sodium tetrahydroborate, the alkali-hydrolysis-treated polymer powders were covered with cobalt. The most suitable amounts of (Co (acac) 3) and sodium tetrahydroborate were 1.0×10-3 and 1.0×10-2mol per 0.5/ m2 of the alkalihydrolysis-treated polymer powders, respectively.
