Description

The adsorption isotherm of poly (acrylic acid) (PAA) on α-alumina showed a strong affinity and the adsorbed amount decreased gradually with increasing pH from 5.2 to 10.2, whereas the adsorbed amount of poly (vinyl pyrrolidone) (PVP) was negligibly small over a whole pH region studied. In a simultaneous adsorption of PAA and PVP, the adsorption of PVP was remarkably enhanced due to hydrogen bonding between PAA and PVP at pH of 5.2 and 7.2, but no adsorption was observed at pH 10.2. However, an appreciable amount of PVP was still remained on the alumina by the pH shifting to 10.2 after the polymers adsorption at pH 5.2.<BR>In addition, the conformation change of the polymers adsorbed using spin-labeled polymers was also evaluated as well as the dispersion stability of alumina suspensions with the polymer adsorption.
