Description

Adsorption behavior of hydroxylpropylmethylcellulose (SH-50) and methylcelluloses (SM-25 and SM-100) on titanium dioxides with and without hydrophobic group was studied by measuring adsorbed amount of cellulose and dispersion stability. The adsorbed amount of these three celluloses on the titanium dioxide with hydrophobic group was considerably great as well as having a higher dispersion stability compared to that without the hydrophobic group. ESR measurements using spin-labeled celluloses showed that the ratio of train segments was decreased at low cellulose concentration and in particular, the ratio with adsorbed SH-50 on titanium dioxide without hydrophobic group was quite small. Thus, it was found that a high dispersion stability of titanium dioxide with hydrophobic group can be obtained due to steric hindrance of adsorbed layer with large adsorbed amount.
