Abstract

We measured a set of titanium mica layers having different pigment sizes with a goniophotometer in order to study the relationship between the pigment size and its optical property. The layer of small-sized pigments (8μm) has shown a wider angular distribution of interference light in comparison with that of middle-sized pigments (16μm). However, the intensity of the interference light from the small-sized pigmented layer has decreased. An optical simulation was done in order for better understanding of optical property of pearl pigments. This calculation has suggested that the intensity of the interference light increases by replacing the mica with air. On the basis of this result, we prepared a layer of hollow-structured small-sized pearl pigments and investigated its optical behavior. The layer of this newpearl pigment has reflected a higher chromatic interference light over wide ranged angles.
