Description

After it was examined that isolated building has high performance in the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake of January 17, 1995, isolated structure, which had been particularly used for nuclear facilities and computer rooms, has been often applied for common buildings such as apartment houses and office buildings. This paper describes the mechanism of isolated structure and various kind of isolation devices, isolator and damper. This paper overviews recent R&D trend of seismically-isolated building after the Hanshin-Awaji Earthquake, focusing development of isolator for detached houses and high-rise buildings, technology related to mid-story isolation system, and application of isolation system for seismic retrofit.
