Abstract

Environment surrounding academic libraries are really changing from printed materials oriented to new challenges of library service and information resources due to rapid progress in information and telecommunication technology and WWW. The author extensively describes how university libraries are changing the services, collection, facilities, staff and users, and moving those to the new environment based on her experiences as a library director of the University of Washington Library. In parallel with price hike in printed materials, number and kinds of electronic information have increased. The budget ratio of electronic materials to the total collection budget has been increasing. The author also describes ILL of library collection among libraries, and joint subscription and licensing of electronic materials.
