Description
Abstract: The sulfur isotopic composition (δ 34S) in the soft tissues of 20 marine shallow-sea benthic animals and 1 freshwater species from northeast Japan (Iwate Prefecture) and southwest Japan (Kumamoto, Fukuoka and Saga Prefectures) was analyzed. The compositions in the marine species ranged from+11.4 to+18. 0‰. Considering the kinetic, negative sulfur isotopic fractionation during the assimilation of sulfur nutrition (6‰), theδ34S values of most samples (δ 34S=+14. 4to+18. 0‰) can be explained by a simple mixing model using sulfur from marine plants (δ 34S=+15 to+19‰) and seawater sulfates (δ34S=+20to+21‰). Three species from Fukuoka which commonly occur in and/or on deep tidal muds (Squilla oratoria, Barnea (Umikakea) dilatata and Taenioides rubicundus) had distinctly lower isotopic values (δ 34S=+11. 4to+12. 2‰) Such isotopic values indicate the assimilation of a different sulfur source, probably involving the incorporation of sulfur derived from the reduction of seawater sulfates by sulfate-reducing bacteria. δ34S values of mud benthos located where hydrogen sulfide prevails are intermediate between those of most samples (δ 34S=+14to+18‰) and those of associated endosymbiotic sulfur-oxidizing bacteria (δ 34S=>-20‰). It was not determined if the soft tissues of benthic animals in muddy environments can provide light sulfur to other animals after the animals die.
