Description
Since the first mega-ship with a carrying capacity of more than 10,000 TEUs was put into the market four years ago, there has been a trend of exansion of mega-ship fleet by major ship operators. In the early years of mega-ship deployment, there were some studies that proved economies of scale by the mega-ship. However, those researches were not practical because the mega-ship and its counterpart ship with a smaller carrying capacity were assumed to be brand new when they were compared in terms of their transportation costs. After ships are completed and put into service, sessile organism is adherent below the wetted surface area of ships, and the size and the displacement of the flooding area change with passage in time. In short, ships get more resistance in cruising at sea as they sail on more voyages. This paper compares the costs incurred to ship operation by mega-ships and smaller sized ships by taking into account a influence of sessile organism to ship bottom, in order to conduct a more practical and precise analysis on economies of scale by mega-ship.
