Abstract
Optimist Dinghy is one of the most popular sailing dinghies for children who are up to 15 years old. However, its performance has not been clarified so far. This time, the motions were measured using Kinematic GPS (K-GPS) of the Optimist Dinghy which actually sailed several times around the track including abeam, close hauled and running conditions at the sea where the influence of wave and tidal current is negligible. The relation between attitude (pitch and roll) and ship speed was captured. From the measurements, it was found that the even keel is the most suitable condition for Optimist Dinghy and the polar diagram is quite different from that of 470-class dinghy.
