Description

Captive model tests were carried out to capture the hydrodynamic force characteristics on maneuvering for a catamaran with asymmetric demi-hulls. Based on the test results, the hydrodynamic force derivatives and coefficients were determined according to the procedure of an equivalent single rudder model. The effect of demi-hull clearance on the rudder normal force and hull-rudder interaction coefficients is small, and the effective rudder force is almost the same in any hull clearances. Absolute values of lateral force and yaw moment acting on the hull become large at the same drift angle with increase of demi-hull clearance. Using the hydrodynamic derivatives and coefficients, turning simulation of the fullscale ship was carried out. The steady turning radius is almost the same as the trial result in case that the rudder angle is 35 degrees, although the tactical diameter and advance of the turning are smaller than those in the trial.
