Description
At present, most of the container ships, PCCs, etc. plying between Japan and the West Coast of North America have adopted the weather routing service in winter. These routed vessels, however, have sometimes encountered the severe weather because of the delay of transmission of the route modification based on the updated forecasts. In this study, an innovative weather routing system using INMARSAT data communications has been developed to provide quickly the optimum route information to the shipmaster. Using a container ship plying Japan-California route, the onboard experiments of the weather routing system were performed in the winter of 1990-1991. By analyzing the results of the experiments, it is concluded that the developed system could provide the optimum (or nearly optimum) routes in most of the calculations during the voyages. The effectiveness of the strategic routing based on the zonal index could be verified as well
