Description

We experienced 137 cases of tympanoplasty over the last 6 years. In these cases, 92 ears were analyzed regarding both their postoperative hearing results and as well as the course of their hearing level. Tympanoplasty type I, modified type III and modified type IV were performed in 61, 15 and 16 ears. The success rates in hearing were 87%, 73% and 56%, respectively, according to the criteria of Clinical Otology Japan (1987). Reviewing our cases, the operative indications and procedures were based on the middle ear preoperative condition (such as the degree of adhesion or sclerotic change). Hearing improvement continued to fluctuate until 12-months after surgery. We thus suggest that the results of tympanoplasty were therefore based on the ability to achieve a normal tympanic mucosa and a stable columella.
