Abstract

Aim: We defined the effect of liquid infusion into the oropharynx in terms of rate, temperature, addition of NaCl and effervescence on eliciting swallowing reflex. Methods: On 10 healthy volunteers liquid was infused through catheter fixed on the base of tongue. Required time and volume of infusion to induce swallowing reflex were determined. Ten actions were experimented on each subject and following settings: (1) distilled water at room temperature (23°C) infused at slow rate (2.5ml/min); (2) distilled water at room temperature infused at rapid rate (13ml/min); (3) physiological saline at room temperature infused at rapid rate; (4) chilled distilled water (12°C) infused at rapid rate; and (5) chilled carbonated water infused at rapid rate. Two-way ANOVA was used for statistical analysis and the level of significance was p<0.05. Results: Statistical significance was indicated as follows. Increase of infusion rate shortened infusion time to elicit swallowing reflex but increased threshold volume. Addition of NaCl increased time and volume. Both chilling of the liquid and addition of effervescent agent reduced time and volume. Conclusions: Effect of types of liquid to induce swallowing reflex was confirmed. Infusion of small quantity of chilled carbonated water into oropharynx can induce swallowing reflex effectively.
