Abstract

A 49-year-old male with a soft palate neoplasm was treated with Cisplatinum. Cisplatinum was given intravenously for a period of 5 months with a total dose of 600 mg. The patient died 3.5 months after the treatment. Morphological study of the organ of Corti was conducted by scanning electron microscopy. The following findings were observed. 1) Although loss of hair cells was seen sporadically, the damage was severest in the lower turn. 2) Outer hair cells were more severely damaged than inner hair cells. 3) The first row of the outer hair cells tended to be more severely damaged. 4) Supporting cells were also damaged.
