Description
Japan It was made to be sampling the leaves of the cedar collected in China (Mt. Tianmu) and Japan (Yakushima Island and Izu Ohshima Island), and following results were obtained by allozyme. Though using 14 kinds of enzymes, the 18 gene locus was confirmed, only LAP had allele a in the cedar of Mt. Tianmu, and also it had alleles a, b and c in the cedar of Yakushima Island and Izu Ohshima Island. From this fact, the population of the cedar with the originally equal origin was isolated by the Sea of Japan, and the slight genetic variation seemed to occur. Therefore, in the current, it is recognized that the cedar which separately grows in China and Japan is distinguished as a form by the allozyme, and the necessity of dividing as a species was not indicated. In the meantime, the morphological features between Chinese cedar and Japanese one are very similar to each other. However, the Chinese cedar has long and nutate needleleaf, while the Japanese one generally has short and seldom nutate needle leaf. Though, it does not seem to become a factor which denies the result of the allozyme.
