Description
This paper examines the background of reverse competitiveness between Japanese and Korean shipbuilding industries during the late 1990s and the beginning of the 2000s and mechanisms or factors behind the reverse. From a long-term analysis focusing on interactions between competitive rivals, we find the following results: Firstly, in response to changes in the market environment, Korean large shipbuilding companies had seized a market opportunity with oversea customer-oriented strategy, larger and high valued product strategy, and product and process innovation. However, the companies did not have a well-planned corporate strategy. Secondly, Japanese large shipbuilding companies had succeeded in diversification strategy, and yet, this success has prevented from re-growth of the shipbuilding business.
