Abstract

Although there have been substantial empirical developments on boundary decisions of the firm, there is little empirical research that convincingly explains firms’ decision-making on the choice between hierarchies and hybrid organizations. In this article, we examine the determinants on boundaries of the firm with both transaction cost theory and knowledge-based theory, taking account of risk perception. The results show the following: (1) knowledge transfer determines the availability of franchising; (2) transaction costs affect the decision on franchising; and (3) risk perception and risk control have effects on franchising.
