Abstract

This paper examines the reason why the diffusion of digital-minilabs was earlier than that of digital still camera (DSC), by analyzing the Japanese photo printing market. We point out that digital-minilabs have been spread quickly throughout the industry, not only to advanced minilab shops which had been aware of the threat of digitization of photographs but also to ordinary minilab shops without such an awareness for the following two reasons: (1) The digital-minilab came to be considered as a standard solution for the issue of digitization of photographs in the photo printing business; and (2) ordinary minilab shops noticed the threat derived by the digitization of photographs, as the concrete solution for the digitization of photographs was shown. Finally, we show a methodological perspective of this study by comparing the above mechanism to such existing theories as diffusion theory and garbage can model.
