Abstract

On the basis of a case study of a Japanese large manufacturing firm, this paper explores the widebreadthskills useful for college graduates to integrate and coordinate activities across functional departments within an organization. The results of the case study are as follows: first, there are two types of widebreadth skills in terms of which of the “part” or the “whole” of an organization the focus in knowing broadly is on; second, it is clear that the two typesʼ skills are built without being developed as generalists; in addition, late screening among college graduates is identified, which is meaningful to the development of wide-breadth skills.
