Abstract

Using survey data, this article aims to examine exactly how people perceive social inequalities of assets and opportunities. People's consciousness on social inequalities consists of following two elements: their perception of inequality and their acceptance of inequality. It is found that people differ in terms of their views on inequalities of opportunities and inequalities of assets. People view that there is greater inequality of assets than inequality of opportunities. However, people are more intolerant on inequalities of opportunities than inequalities of assets.<br>Factor analysis reveals that consciousnesses on social inequalities are different from conventional stratification-related consciousnesses such as the strata identification and the life satisfaction in the relationship to the extracted factors. Moreover, there are negative weak correlations between social positions and people's perceptions of inequalities, while there are positive weak correlations between social positions and people's acceptances of inequalities.
