Description

The authors have constructed a digital optical computing system, called hybrid-optical parallel array logic system 162 (H-OPALS162). The system can execute neighborhood operations in parallel for two images consisting of 16×16 pixels. To achieve overall operation of the system, we developed an optical discrete correlator that enables the H-OPALS162 to execute programmable neighborhood operations. Noise reduction and lateral edge detection were executed to verify operation in the system. The frame rate of the system is 1.32 frame/s. We estimated that the speed of the constructed system can be increased up to 20 k frame/s.
