Description

This paper deals with a second-order elastic-plastic analysis of plane frames under proportional loading, in which the yield condition is used considering the combination of bending moment and axial force. Frames are assumed to consist of elastic-perfectly plastic material, and flow law of Mises criterion is assumed to be valid in plastic range. The nonlinear relationships of incremental forces and deflections at yield sections are replaced with linear ones by the methods of lower and upper bound procedures. The loading is changed by minimum load factor, and complete nonlinear load-deflection curve of a frame is traced up to collapse by mechanism or overall buckling. The nonlinear basic formulas of the deformation method for the members which have various end conditions are derived considering the instability effect of axial force, the change of geometry and the initial deformation of the member. The analytical procedure is programmed for digital computer FACOM 230-75. Numerical examples for portal frames are given, and the results are compared with the analytical data available in the literature to disscuss the validity of this analysis.
