In the present paper the author indicates that the main factors involved in the changes of environment are the subdivision of housing sites and the increase in the number of apartment buildings. The paper is primarily concerned with the former. The researches were conducted in two blocks and several other areas along the Toyoko and Odakyu Lines in Meguro and Setagaya Wards during the periods 1928〜1974 (for two blocks) and 1969-1974 (for several other areas) respectively The results obtained may be summarized as follows : (1) The subdivision of housing sites and the changes in land ownership can be witnessed on an extensive scale in the areas surveyed. (2) These were caused by the leaseholders' buying-up of their leased plots, land, aquisition by inheritance, and land trading. (3) The active participation of corporations in land ownership has contributed to accelerating land subdivision.
