Abstract

The crystal chemistry of palenzonaite, berzeliite and manganberzeliite was studied. Simplified formula of these minerals with garnet structures is represented as NaCa2Y2+2Z5+3O12, and tetrahedral V5+, As5+ at Z charge balanced by divalent cations at Y and by Na and Ca at X. The <Z-O> and <Y-O> distances show a positive correlation against mean ionic radii of each occupant. However, <X-O> has no correlation in spite of variable (Na, Ca) occupancy. The size of Mg and Mn allows the shared edge of XO8 and YO6 to be similar to the unshared edge, which is a measure of lattice distortion in garnet structures.
