Abstract

Light qualities such as spectra, intensity, and irradiation intermittence significantly affect photosynthesis and photomorphogenesis in plants. The invention of red (R), green, and blue (B) light emitting diodes (LED) has made it possible to provide the three primary colors of light. Because LED have a considerable potential for new artificial lights to cultivate plants efficiently and economically, we have studied the effect of LED irradiation on biosynthesis of polyphenols in buckwheat sprouts. In this paper, it is reported that use of LED can remarkably accelerate the biosynthesis of polyphenols depending on the wavelength and intensity of light.
