Abstract
The authors have developed a mercury free sterilization lamp using 253 nm emission of xenon iodide. The lamp consists of two coaxial tube made of synthesized silica. The dielectric barrier discharge is initiated in the gap between two tubes.<BR> Several I* atomic emissions were observed around 200 nm as well as XeI* emission at 253 nm. Both of them overlap peaks of DNA absorption spectrum. From the experimental result of the lamp irradiation to B. subtilis spores, it was found that equivalent sterilization effect was obtained with less UV dose than commercial low pressure mercury lamp for sterilization (Toshiba, GL-4).
