Scandium-Ion Bridged Chiral Radical Anion Dimer Complexes Formed in Electron-Transfer Reduction of p-Benzoquinones

Description
The addition of a Sc3+ complex of [R-(R,R)]-2,6-bis(4,5-dihydro-4-phenyl-2-oxazolinyl)pyridine, (Sc3+(R)-pybox), to a deaerated acetonitrile (MeCN) solution of 1,4-naphthoquinone (NQ) and hydronaphthoquinone (NQH2) results in formation of the chiral pi-radical anion dimer complex [(NQ-)2-(Sc3+(R)-pybox)2], which has strong absorption band at 580 nm. The (NQ-)2-(Sc3+(R)-pybox)2 complex exhibits a positive Cotton effect in the long wavelength region. A negative Cotton effect is observed when Sc3+ (R)-pybox is replaced by Sc3+ (S)-pybox.
