Abstract
Using ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy and metastable atom electron spectroscopy, the electronic structure and the conformation of large cycloalkanes have been studied in gas phase and the extrathin films. Observation of the density of states and the local electron distribution of pseudo-pi and sigma MOs comprising carbon 2p and hydrogen 1s AOs suggests a square and a narrow rectangle form for molecules in gas phase and those adsorbed on a cooled graphite (0001) surface, respectively; the latter is similar to the form in the bulk crystal. The orientation of the long sides (trans methylene sequences) of the rectangle is found to be changed from edge-on to flat-on upon raising the substrate temperature.
