Syntheses of Medium- and Large-membered Heterocycles Containing Trisulfide Bond(s)

Description
The reaction of CH2I2 with two molar amounts of 2,2-bis(diethylamino)ethan-2-ylium-1-dithioate (1) in CH2Cl2 at RT provided the water-soluble bis-carbenium salt (2) in 82% yield. Treatment of (2) with aqueous Na2S in H2O/Me2CO below 0 °C resulted in the precipitation of the crystalline product. The mere filtration of the crystals gave a 1,2,3,5,7-pentatiocane derivative (3) in 94% yield. In similar ways, starting from &alpha, &alpha'-dibromo-o-, m-, and p-xylenes, trisulfides (7), (8), and (9), which have 11, 12, and 13 membered-rings, respectively, were obtained in excellent overall yields. Some other cyclic trisulfides were synthesized in similar ways.
