Abstract
Previously, we have synthesized fullerene C70 encapsulating one or two molecule(s) of H2. Although the interaction between the encapsulated H2 and C70 cage is quite minute for H2@C70, it is expected that the difference in chemical reactivity of the outer C70 cage becomes appreciable when two molecules of H2 are incorporated inside the cage. Thus, we conducted a [4+2] cycloaddition reaction with 9,10-dimethylanthracene(DMA). Variable temperature NMR spectra for a solution of mixture of H2@C70, (H2)2@C70, and C70 (molar ratio, 70:2:28) and DMA in ODCB-d4 were taken at 30, 40, 50.degree.C. We found that the equilibrium constant for the addition of DMA to (H2)2@C70 at each temperature is about 15% lower than that to H2@C70, demonstrating the "apparently" decreased reactivity of (H2)2@C70 toward DMA. The results of the theoretical calculation will be also discussed.
