Abstract

We have synthesized pyrazinyl-(2-pyridyl)-(3-pyridyl)-(4-pyridyl)methane 1 and phenyl-pyrazinyl-(2-pyridyl)-(3-pyridyl)methane 2 as novel chiral molecules based on tetraarylmethane framework. Both 1 and 2 are expected to form complexes with metal ions as bidentate ligands. The structure of 1 and 2 are identified by NMR and high resolution mass spectroscopies. The structure of 1 was also established by X-ray analysis. Both 1 and 2 was separated by a chiral HPLC, which was confirmed by CD measurement of the separated two fractions. We added a variety of metal ions into optically-pure 1 or 2 in methanol and measured CD spectra. Interestingly, the CD spectrum was selectively changed by the addition of Cu(II) ion. Moreover, we have synthesized phenyl-pyrazinyl-(2-pyridyl)-(2-pyrimidinyl)methane 3, which is expected to act as tridentate ligand. Therefore, 3 is expected to interact with metal ions stronger than 1 and 2. We will also report the optical resolution, chiroptical properties and metal-binding properties of 3.
