Description
Polyolefins such as polypropylene (PP) and polyethylene (PE) are extensively used because of the high tensile strength and excellent chemical resistance. However, as their chemical improvement is very difficult, they cannot be dyed with any dyes, or bonded well to the other materials using any adhesives. The present study was carried out in order to improve the surface property of these materials. PP and ultra-high molecular weight PE were treated by the activation process. The activated polymers were successively treated with a mixture of monomers and other reagents. Obtained PP and ultra-high molecular weight PE could be strongly bonded to the other materials such as paper, polyvinylchloride or polymethylmethacrylate resins, and aluminum using commercial adhesives. In addition, these materials could be coated using acrylic paints.
