Abstract

This paper presents a numerical method based on the Vortex Distribution Method for analyzing aero-dynamic characteristics of two dimensional membrane sails. The numerical method consists of two principal algorithms. One is the algorithm for calculating pressure distribution on the sail based on the Vortex Distribution Method and the other is the algorithm for calculating the sail configuration on the basis of the Membrane Hypothesis by using calculated pressure distribution. A series of numerical calcurations are performed for two sails which can be considered a sloop rig. In these calcurations aero-dynamic characteristics of the sloop rig are examined by means of changing eight parameters (main sail trim angle, jib trim angle, main sail cord, jib cord, main sail length divided by main sail cord, jib length divided by jib cord, angle of attack, and distance between both leading edges of sails). Furthermore, it is certified that optimal values about the distance between leading edges and the ratio of the cord of the jib to that of the main sail can be obtained assuming that both the jib and the main sail are trimmed at an angle of ideal angle of attack.
