Elastoplastic large deflection analyses of a simply supported thick rectangular plate subjected to combined inplane loads such as bi-axial compression and shear have been performed using non-linear finite element method. The ultimate strength interaction curves obtained by FEM analyses are compared with the interaction curves of classification societies to check up to what extent the plastic correction formula is reliable when it is applied to plate panels directly. The following conclusions are drawn from this study: (1) Upper bound of the maximum initial deflection in the actual ship plates can be approximated by w_<0max>=0.1β^2t. (2) For the combined loading cases, loading methods including loading sequences and load control methods have only a negligible effect on the yielding-strength and ultimate-strength interaction curves. (3) Plastic correction method used in the existing classification society rules have applicability to thick plates as an estimation method of ultimate strength on the safe side within the limit of upper bound of actual initial deflection, but in some cases it may give strength on the unsafe side depending on the ratios of applied loads. (4) A simple modification has been proposed as an attempt to shift the estimated buckling strength towards the safe side, and its fundamental effectiveness has been demonstrated.
