Description

We apply a simple surface panel method to estimation of hydrodynamic forces acting on a ship in oblique towing. This method uses source distributions (Hess and Smith type) on the hull surface and discrete vortex distributions arranged on the center plane of the hull according to Lan's quasi-continuous vortex lattice method (QCM). Then these singularities are determined at a time by solving simultaneously both the hull surface and the center plane conditions that the normal velocity should be zero. Since these singularities satisfy automatically the Kutta condition, we need not use any iterative procedure. We named this method SQCM (Source and QCM). In this paper we show numerical results for three VLCC models (SR221-A, B, C) which have different aft shapes with each other. Pressure distributions obtained by the present method agree with the experimental data quantitatively. The agreements of estimated hydrodynamic forces and experimental ones are fairly well.
