Abstract

This paper deals with the problem for proposing a new decision procedure of the freeboard of an open-top container ship going in ocean. The decision procedure is mainly constructed with the algorithm of estimating statistically the time lasting period for deck wetness on the ship. The deck wetness is one of the most important factors for designing a type of open-top container ship, which has the fear of the flood of shipping water in hold. It generally means the situation in which the relative motion amplitude between deck and wave surface exceeds the freeboard, therefore it is proposed that the time during which the amplitude remains above a level of freeboard should be appraised on the basis of the statistical theory in this paper. A series of numerical calculations are executed for four different ocean-going container ships having 150 meters ship length considered as apparent open-top container ships by the algorithm referring to ILLC 1966. And it is certified that the present decision procedure of the freeboard is practical for planning a type of open-top container ship sailing in the sea.
