A combined boundary-integral equations method has been developed for the estimation of hydrodynamic forces and/or motions of a ship in waves, in order to obtain the solutions which accurately satisfy the radiation condition at infinity. The fluid domain around the ship is treated to be decomposed into the near field and the far field by an artificial surface situated at a little bit far from the ship. Several kinds of modified free-surface conditions accounting for the steady disturbance and a classical one which includs only the effect of the steady uniform-flow are applied respectively for those fluid domains, and two solutions formulated by means of the boundary-integral equation method are combined on the artificial surface. The application of this method makes it possible not only to treat the modified free-surface condition in the near field of the ship, but also to achieve the accurate satisfaction of the radiation condition due to the employment of the 'free-surface Green function' which analytically satisfies the classical free-surface condition in the far field. Numerical calculations for validating the present method have been performed by applying the classical free-surface condition for both near and far fields, and the results are compared with the results of the 3-D panel method. Through the detail comparisons with respect to the wave excitiong forces acting on the ship, potential distributions on the free-surface, etc., it has been confirmed that the complex radiation condition can be satisfied accurately by the present method, and also the hydrodynamic forces can be estimated in good accuracy.
