The digital computer, NEAC2203, was used for the purpose of analyzing and designing automatically the double circuit transmission towers with two ground wires and three cross-arms, according to the specification JEC (Japan Electric Code) 127. The structual system is the double Warren type, and number of pannels is less than 30. The horizontal loads were assumed to be equally distributed to the two faces of the tower and the vertical loads to the four legs. In this program, leg and lacing members were assumed as compression members and joints and bolts were excluded. The input data are as follows: (1) Horizontal and vertical loads. (2) The tower outline dimensions (pannel length, cross-arm length, tower width) bracing type (as for application of redundant members) (3) Position of bross-arms. (4) Allowable stress, cross-sectional area, radius of gyration, weight and wind load per meter of equal angles, and limit of slenderness ratio. The output data are shown below: (1) Members stress due to each load condition. Max. stress of each member. (2) Size, unsupported length, slenderness ratio and allowable strength of each stress member. Size of each redundant member. (3) Weight of the tower. More than 3500 instructions were required to complete the programming in the above-mentioned conditions, and about 2 minutes were needed to execute the calculation, 8 minutes to read in, 30 minutes to print the output data.
