Abstract

Slates containing asbestos fibers were collected at the storage yard for the debris of big disaster by the earthquake and the tunami occurred at east-north part of Japan, March 11, 2011.  The asbestos fibers was decomposed to less than 0.1 % in content after mixing of the slates with calcium polysulfide solution in a rotating reaction vessel with ceramic balls for 20 hours at ambient temperature. The content of asbestos fibers was determined by a phase contrast microscope with diversion staining.  X-ray diffraction (XRD) indicated complete disappearance of specific main-peaks of asbestos fibers after the treatment and involvement of sulfur, calcium sulfite and calcium sulfate in the products.  The oxidation state of sulfur compounds was also confirmed by an X-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra.  The present method could decompose asbestos involved in slates as well as sprayed asbestos.
