Abstract

Numerical simulation of the inlet flow of a nematic liquid crystal have been performed , using the Doi theory with Marrucci-Greco nematic potential and the constitutive equation proposed by Feng and coworkers. To avoid the closer approximations while are required to transform the evolution equation of the orientation distribution function to the closed evolution equation of the order parameter tensor , the configuration of the alignment of nematic molecules under flow is derived from the orientation distribution function by applying the spherical harmonic function. From the results, it is found that the orientation distribution function profile develops with flow. The spatially homogeneous distribution of the function with the major orientation parallel to the gap direction finally reaches the distribution that the major orientation direction at the bulk region is almost parallel to the flow direction.
