Description

Many codes and standards prescribe external pressure coefficients on one face of a gable roof as same as that of a mono-slope roof with the identical roof slope. However, the effect of a ridge of a gable roof to the pressure on the leeward roof surface may differ from that of higher eaves of a mono-slope roof. Consequently, pressure coefficients on a gable roof should be different from those on a mono-slope roof with the identical roof pitch. This paper describes pressure coefficients for MWFRS (Main Wind-Force Resisting System) on several gable and mono-slope roofs from a wind tunnel study. The results show that values of pressure coefficients in the current building code may underestimate values from the wind tunnel study, especially those on the downwind face of mono-slope roofs behind of the higher eaves.
