Description
An advanced interval analysis method using higher-order Taylor series expansion is presented for evaluating the robustness of a planar shear building with passive dampers including supporting members. Although it is necessary to understand the relationship between the capacity of passive dampers and the response reduction effect accurately, the great uncertainty in both damping coefficients and their supporting member stiffness may exist due to various reasons such as performance deterioration. For this reason, the robustness evaluation by interval analysis methodologies is introduced where the design parameters for passive dampers are set as interval parameters. The objective function is given by either the sum of the stochastic interstorey drifts or acceleration at the top floor. It is shown that the use of second-order Taylor series expansion in the interval analysis leads to more efficient and accurate calculation.
