Description
SEM/TEM observations revealed that PMA-treated THP 1 (macrophage) cells actively phagocytized sub-micron titanium particles into phagosome while extending many projections and avoiding nucleus. Phagocytosis of Ti particles appeared to cause tissue inflammation because TNF-alpha production in the culture supernatant was increased by ten-fold.
